The Evils of Sugar
One of the primary sources of excess calories in the developed world is sugar – specifically high fructose corn syrup and processed foods. Sugar may even be the largest factor underlying obesity and chronic disease.
Not all sugars were created equal. All sugars are carbohydrates. Simple sugars are called monosaccharaides and include glucose (found in blood), fructose (found in plants) and galactose. Disaccharides are compounds of two monosaccharaides and include sucrose (table sugar), maltose and lactose (found in dairy products).
When you are munching down on plants and absorbing their fructose, your body is able to utilize the carbohydrate for energy with the help of all the proteins, vitamins and minerals nature packs into plants. When you are sipping cola, there is nothing but empty calories. Worse than providing nothing beneficial, refined sugar actually leaches the body through the demand its digestion, detoxification and elimination makes on your body.
The first organ to feel the negative effects of constantly feeding your body refined sugar is your liver. After being converted in glucose, it sits there until your liver comes bloated and full. Once that has happened, it spreads through your body, resting mainly on your abdomen. As your waist expands and the scales start to struggle, the fat begins to congregate around your vital organs, such as the heart. This causes everything to slow down, and work much less efficiently.
This in turn takes a toll on our body’s natural defences. The immune system becomes shattered.
To drive home the point that sugar is indeed worse than nothing a French physiologist F. Magendie published a series of experiments where he fed dogs nothing but sugar and water. Every dog died. His experiments showed that even though plain water can keep you alive for some time, sugar and water will kill you.
Symptoms of sugar damage
|Joint Pains||High Blood Pressure||Kidney Stones|
Fortunately following the Paleo diet means cutting out all the refined sugar so if you have chosen to follow the Paleo lifestyle you don’t need to give any worry about sugar damage. If you aren’t already following the Paleo lifestyle, you might want to keep a close eye on the list of symptoms. Leaving sugar damage unchecked can lead to no end of complications and illnesses. The most worrisome of these being cancer.
There is no end of research linking cancer and sugar damage. A study of 40,000 American women conducted by Harvard Medical School found that those who ate the most foods with glycemic levels (high levels of fast digested sugars) had almost three times the risk of getting colorectal cancer than normal.
A similar study showed a 135% higher increase in rates of breast cancers over 7 years for women with raised blood sugar levels. A Swedish study found that consuming added sugar, soft drink and sweetened fruit juice increased the risk of pancreatic cancer in both men and women. They found those who drank the most soft drinks had a 93% higher risk than those who drank a minimal amount.
If this isn’t enough to convince you of the dangers of refined or excess sugar, there was an incredibly large study carried out by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea, tracking 1.3 million men and women. The study found those participants consuming the highest levels of sugar were both more likely to develop cancer and to go on to die from all types of cancer.
